► (1845-1937) Político estadounidense. Desarrolló las ideas americanistas. Fue premio Nobel de la Paz en 1912.

(15 feb. 1845, Clinton, N.Y., EE.UU.–7 feb. 1937, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Abogado y diplomático estadounidense. En 1883 fue fiscal del distrito sur de Nueva York. Entre 1899 y 1904 fue secretario de guerra. Después de la guerra hispano-estadounidense, instaló en Puerto Rico un gobierno civil y organizó el control estadounidense de las Filipinas. Como secretario de Estado (1905–09) durante el gobierno de Theodore Roosevelt, cerró tratados con Japón y convenció a los países latinoamericanos de que participaran en la segunda conferencia de La Haya (1907 (ver convención de La Haya). Recibió el Premio Nobel de la Paz de 1912. Integró el Senado entre 1909 y 1915. Partidario de la Sociedad de Naciones, colaboró en la redacción de la ley que creó la Corte Internacional de Justicia.
